A 2023 Italian comedy “A Brighter Tomorrow” by Nanni Moretti tells the story of a film director, Giovanni, played by Nanni Moretti himself.
Giovanni is struggling to shoot his movie about the Italian tour of the traveling circus from Hungary at the invitation of Italian Communist party that happened in 1956. According the Giovanni’s script, Circus arrives at the same time when the Hungarian Uprising happened.
Playfully Moretti tries uncover what cinema means for audience not without picking fun at himself. And at Netflix. But what was particularly interesting to me that «A Brighter Tomorrow” is already the second movie at the Cannes Film Festival this year that contains news about Russian aggression.
This time in a form of the television chronicle about the Hungarian Revolution that lasted 12 days before being crushed by Soviet tanks and troops on November 4, 1956. “Let’s dissociate from the Soviet Union“, a comrade Vera proposes to her party boss, Ennio, and together with her 69-year-old Nanni Moretti himself, who is well known for his left-wing political views.
